    RYA VHF-SRC course at West Coast Lisbon Training Centre

    RYA VHF-SRC

    The VHF is probably the most important safety equipment on board, making it essential to master its operation.

    The VHF-SRC (Short Range Certificate) licence is also the minimum legally required certification to operate a VHF or VHF with DSC (Digital Selective Calling). It has worldwide acceptance as it is within the ITU (International Telecomunication Union) standards and specifications. The Portuguese VHF-A certificate now included in the portuguese licences, is a more basic course and does not include DSC operation and GMDSS training. This RYA course is also taught with practical simulators which make the learning more effective and conneted to the real operation of the VHF.

    To obtain the legal VHF-SRC operator certificate, besides completing the course (in-person or online), you must pass an exam. This exam, conducted entirely in English, has two parts: a written test and a practical competence test on VHF with DSC usage.

        Programme

        The programme includes the following topics:

        • Basic VHF operation and commands;

        • Frequencies (channels) used for distress and urgency;

        • Ship-to-Shore and Ship-to-Ship communications;

        • DSC calls;

        • GMDSS system, EPIRB and SART.

        The exam is in-person, conducted at our facilities, and lasts 1,5 hours. At West Coast, you can schedule your exam any day of the week.

        The exam process includes the following steps:

        • Written Test (30-45 minutes);

        • Familiarisation with equipment (especially important for online course participants);

        • Practical test (using simulators) (30-45 minutes)

        Results are generally known immediately after the exam. We handle all documentation submission to the RYA, and the certificate is sent directly by post to your address.

        The written exam consists of multiple-choice and short-answer questions, covering any part of the RYA VHF-SRC course programme.

        The practical exam using simulators may cover any of the following areas:

        A. Distress Communications

        1. Define a distress situation;

        2. Initiate a DSC alert with manual or automatic position input;

        3. Send a "mayday" distress call by voice;

        4. Respond appropriately to a DSC distress alert, including a "Mayday Relay" message;

        5. Know how to use and activate an EPIRB and a SART;

        6. Understand procedures to cancel a distress alert sent in error.

        B. Urgency Communications (PAN PAN)

        1. Recognise situations requiring an urgency call;

        2. Send a voice or DSC urgency alert appropriately;

        3. Follow procedures for canceling an urgency alert sent in error.

        C. Routine Communications

        1. VHF procedures for routine calls;

        2. Use of working channels and call signs;

        3. Communications with coastal stations, other vessels, and harbours;

        4. Handling incoming calls appropriately.
