      This is a theoretical course, essential for anyone planning to take the RYA Coastal Skipper or to sit one of the Yachtmaster examinations (Coastal or Offshore).

      It covers advanced navigation concepts and passage planning for both coastal and offshore sailing. Detailed instruction includes tides, the use of the Almanac and "Tidal Atlas", major and secondary ports. Additionally, it covers advanced meteorology, safety, ColReg's, and electronic navigation aids. Voyage planning and pilotage are also explored in depth.

       All RYA courses are taught in English.

      Programme

      Before starting your course, you will receive a diagnostic test and some recommended RIEAM revision materials, essential for keeping up with the programme.


      On the first day, you will receive your learning pack, which includes a "Yachtmaster Handbook" and a "GPS Chartplotter" simulator to be used throughout the course.


      The final 8-hour examination consists of three parts: RIEAM, chartwork, and meteorology. Additionally, the course covers safety equipment, stability, skipper responsibilities, electronics, and navigation. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

      • Position fixing;

      • Heading, course, and course to steer;

      • Advanced tidal knowledge;

      • Use of the Almanac and Admiralty publications;

      • Electronic navigation;

      • Obtaining and interpreting weather forecasts;

      • Weather systems;

      • Forecasting using barometer readings and observations;

      • ColReg's;

      • Sailing abroad - customs and regulations.

      Requirements

      This is an advanced navigation course. Participants are usually expected to have completed the "RYA Day Skipper Shorebased" course or possess equivalent knowledge.


      The instructor assumes prior navigation experience and practical knowledge. It is also recommended that you have VHF operation knowledge or have completed the RYA VHF-SRC course.


      40 hours of theoretical instruction (in-person) followed by an 8-hour final examination (3 papers).


      Duration

      There are several ways to attend:

      • In-person, 5 full days from 09:30 to 17:00 (weekday or weekend);

      • In-person, evening sessions with 14 lessons of 3 hours each;

      • In-person, weekday sessions with 10 lessons of 4 hours each (5 weeks);

      • Online, distance learning (e-learning) with support from a qualified RYA instructor;
