Programme
This course is mainly intended for beginners aiming to progress to Skipper level (sail or motor). At the end, there is a 4-hour exam to obtain the certificate.
The programme includes:
Seamanship and Safety;
Terminology, construction and characteristics of a recreational craft;
Coastal Navigation and Pilotage;
Electronic Navigation;
Chartwork and Electronic Charts;
Position Fixing;
Course to Steer, track and course made good;
Basic knowledge of lights;
Tides;
Meteorology;
COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea);
Emergencies and safety procedures (VHF, flares, harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts).

Requirements
This course is available to beginners and has no prerequisites. However, most students already have a few days’ experience as crew on a sailing yacht or motor vessel.
Some practical experience is highly recommended in order to get the most from the course. For example, if you have completed RYA Start Yachting, RYA Competent Crew, or RYA Powerboat Level 2...
Duration
The classroom course has a total duration of 40 hours.
There are several options:
Online, via e-learning with support from an RYA-certified instructor;
Classroom, 5 consecutive days (09:30 to 17:00);
Classroom, private lessons (personalised programme).
Locations
Oeiras Marina offers quick access to excellent sailing waters. It has modern nautical support facilities, including restaurants, shops, changing rooms, security and parking.
Nearby you will find several beaches, an ocean pool and a seaside promenade.
Its location at the entrance of the Tagus estuary allows you to sail either in open sea or in sheltered waters.
The proximity to Cascais and Belém, as well as the quick access to destinations such as Sesimbra, is an added advantage.
