RYA Radar equipment onboard a leisure yacht – vital for navigation and collision avoidance

RYA Radar

Radar is arguably the most versatile electronic tool on board leisure vessels. It is commonly found on both sailing yachts and motorboats and provides invaluable support for navigation and collision avoidance.

However, it is only truly effective when operated by a trained and experienced user.

This course provides the training and knowledge needed to get the most out of this equipment and use it with confidence.

The course is taught in English and leads to an official RYA certificate.

Programme

Over a full day, you will learn to adjust all radar controls, interpret radar images, and use the equipment for navigation and collision avoidance.

The course uses a radar simulator where you will practice various scenarios and gain hands-on experience operating the equipment.

Topics covered include:

  • Radar operation and powering on the system;

  • Understanding radar images;

  • Refining radar images;

  • Radar reflectors;

  • Radar and COLREGS - collision avoidance;

  • Determining position using radar;

  • Radar piloting techniques.

The course fee includes 1 support book with exercises (RYA Radar Exercises) as well as a certificate upon successful completion.

It is also possible to arrange individual or customised training, using either the simulator, your own vessel, or a combination of both.

While on-board courses are possible, prior simulator use is recommended. This allows the instructor to create a variety of scenarios tailored to your needs.
